Kempers: January 2018

Enschede, December 23rd, 2017
Hello dear friends,

We’ve had a pretty turbulent year with challenges in all kinds of areas. One of the biggest challenges was finding a new home (again). Two moves within one and a half years affects you deeply…. Settling in the Netherlands and getting used to Dutch culture and life again is a process. It is reassuring that we can stay in this house for a longer period of time. Compared to our previous homes, this one is small, but cozy all together.

Kempers: September 2017

Hello dear friends,

We have a home!! How grateful we are to God for his faithfulness and timing! It’s a long-term home in a recently refurbished working-class neighborhood!

Last week, Henk had a dream in which we were selected 1st. In the dream he saw an email with the text “Congratulations! You are selected 1st for a house!” A street name was visible, but Henk could not remember it when he woke up. In the afternoon he checked his emails, and sure enough… an email of the housing corporation, with the same text as in the dream!
Upcoming Tuesday September 19th we will get the key. We’ll have 10 days to fix up, paint and clean the house. If you live in the area and you would like to help with any of these jobs and/or with the moving itself? That would be great! Also, there are some things we need for our new home, because certain things belong to the vicarage and will have to stay there. If you have one of the following items (in good condition) but you don’t use it anymore, you could make us very happy with it:

– refrigerator with deepfreeze
– stove (with/without cooker hood)
– wardrobes (1 for Nathan, 1 for Henk and Joan)

Do you have an item on the list or would you like to sponsor one? Would you like to help out practically? Or do you have any questions? Please send a private message via facebook or to h.justgo4it@gmail.com so we can coordinate everything.

Warm greetings,
Henk, Joan, Nathan and Ezra

Beste vrienden & kennissen,

Entree is gratis.

Alvast bedankt!

Hartelijke groeten,
Henk, Joan, Nathan en Ezra

Kempers: February 2017

The last few weeks Joan and I were restless with reference to the upcoming blessing as a pastor. We have talked a lot with each other and with our advisers. We’ve asked God how to proceed and we feel we have to go back to the basics. What does God require of us? What is our calling?

Jesus told us to make disciples. We believe in relational discipleship, discipleship out of friendship. We believe that through discipleship lives will change by the Holy Spirit.

We’ve returned to the Netherlands. One of the reasons being the Roma in Enschede and the surrounding area. They’ve asked us for help and coaching. In the beginning this happened in the homes of the Roma. Their wish was a Kangeri Romani, a Roma church. And a Roma church came about.

We’ve always expressed that we don’t want to be a pastor of a church, instead we want to help and train people on the basis of friendship like we did these past years on Curacao. We want to disciple people who just met Jesus by what we’ve learned from and experienced with Jesus in our own walk with Him.

A half year ago we chose to help and support the Roma with the Roma church anyway. Now, a half year later we’ve come to the conclusion that leading a church in this form is not our calling. We accepted the challenge and tried by putting in our time and effort. And we found out that this doesn’t suit us and the calling on our lives. Our calling is discipleship out of friendship, helping people, walking alongside them and seeing their lives changed by the Holy Spirit.

Our home is still open to those – Roma or non-Roma – who want to walk with Jesus together. And still there will be bible studies. And still we will be visiting people in their homes. So we keep on helping and training people, but in a way fitting for us. Greetings Henk Kempers….

Kempers: December 2016

Enschede, December 22nd, 2016
Hello dear friends,

Our first December in the Netherlands is a busy, cozy, somewhat emotional month. We look back at the past year, one tumultuous and stressful year… What a roller coaster it was! At times we thought we would fall out the cart, but God held us. Re-entry has not been easy so far, but God is good and faithful! Besides organizing all the practical things, it’s also important to stay emotional on track…. but sometimes you can go into a skid and then you need some help getting back on track. Unfortunately, due to stress and overburdening Joan has become overstrained. Overcoming this is a proces of ups and downs. But God is in this as well. The boys enjoy going to school. Ezra has regular playdates and is building his own social network. Fun to see. For Nathan it’s a bit harder and needs some help with it. And Henk is in his element amongst the Roma. Together we are trying to find our way and take root in the Netherlands…

The Gypsies

The first weekend of December we had a great time with the Kwiek family, Roma’s from Germany. They spoke and sang in our Roma church. God was tangibly present. Over 200 Roma heard the Word, 40 gave their lives to Jesus and 8 got baptized.

After this weekend we welcomed Radko Kratsov (national leader of Youth with a Mission Bulgaria) into our home. He stayed with us for a week. He’s a Roma too, married to a Turkish Roma. He’s a man of God, has a lotto knowledge of the Bible and Roma culture and has many years of experience working with the Roma. We concluded the week with a mini conference about the Roma culture in light of the Bible.

Last Sunday we had a Christmas meal in our church. Everyone brought some food and we shared it with each other. We closed off with breaking bread and drinking wine together. Beautiful closing off the year like this. In the first week of January activities start again, now it’s family time.

Looking forward

We’re excited about what God will be doing in and through us in 2017. Hopefully it will be calmer than 2016 and we are able to settle and experience His peace through it all. In February we’ll hear if we can stay in this home (the vicarage of the Dutch Reformed Church here in Enschede). What the outcome may be, we trust God He knows best where our home should be. Meanwhile we enjoy this home to the full!
Coming year Henk will continue his trainings for becoming self-employed so we don’t have to rely on welfare any more.
In April 2017 Henk wants to take a group of Dutch Romas on a mission’s trip to Bulgaria. We want to research what we can do as a Roma church for the Romas in the city of Sliven (hometown of Radko), home to 60,000 Romas living in very baren conditions. We consciously don’t choose Romas in Rumania, because they already receive more attention. Besides we would like to reinforce the relationship with Radko which developed when he was here.

Gratitude and wishes

We would like to thank every one who supported us this past year! Being it in prayer, financially, practically (our first housing, helping with painting, hauling, drilling, planning and chauffeuring around, watching the boys etc), in kind (furniture, decorations, clothing, groceries, bikes, bedding, a printer etc), emotionally (a smile, encouragement, a card or message, a spontaneous visit etc). We’re sure we left things out… There’s simply too much, we are so blessed by you all! Without God and you all we would not be where we are now!

We wish you a blessed Christmas and all the best for 2017!!

Warm greetings,
Henk, Joan, Nathan and Ezra

Kempers: Update 2016

Dear Friends, There are some new developments in our lives and family, we would like to share with you. After having lived and worked in Curacao for 7 years, we as a family have decided to move back to the Netherlands. For several reasons.
First of all, for a longer period of time Henk doesn’t experience joy and satisfaction anymore in his work and isn’t reaching his full potential. Fruits are there: people come to Jesus, get baptized, get a job, receive training and coaching and either go or don’t go to a local church. We’ve invested in people’s lives, but building a deeper relationship with them remains hard and stays superficial. The wall Henk keeps hitting, is lack of spiritual hunger. This hunger he does see in the Roma people, whom he baptized in the Netherlands last October. Till this day there’s daily contact and they keep asking ‘When are you coming back? We need you!’
Secondly, especially Joan and the boys miss the family a lot. Leaving our family has been a huge sacrifice. Henk’s mother as well as Joan’s father are hitting their eighties, so we really would like to be near them and the rest of the family at this stage of life. We think it’s very valuable and precious.
A third reason is the on-going financial stress. The monthly support, being structurally or one-time donations, even combined with temporary paid work, isn’t enough to get by. It feels like surviving instead of living, and that’s not God’s purpose. Our decision has not come suddenly. We’ve prayed about all three points for quite a while, talked about it with each other a lot and asked feedback from our board and counselors. It’s a process in which God lets us look honestly at the situation, ourselves and our hearts.
We experience joy and peace in our decision, and at the same time sadness and insecurity. We look forward to our ‘new’ life in a familiar –but certainly changed- country together with family, new work, new schools. And yet it’s also challenging… we do realize who and what we leave behind, and that we start all over again in the Netherlands. With four suitcases we came, with four suitcases we go back. Such a transition won’t be easy, but we believe God will be in this too.
We would like to move to Enschede (in the East of the Netherlands) where our families live, as well as the Roma people Henk will be working with. There are some job opportunities already. If these don’t work out (on time), Henk will be applying for social security in the beginning. Furthermore he’s looking into possibilities to earn money to get financially healthy as a family, and no longer than needed be dependent on social security. He’ll still be available for speaking engagements, conferences, training and coaching.
At the moment we’re already busy with practical and organizational matters for migrating back. Our goal is to move during the Summer Holidays, so the boys can start their new schoolyear in the Netherlands. Also in this process of preparation and transition with all its challenges, regulations, letting go’s and goodbye’s, we ask you for your prayers. Please pray for us, for wisdom and understanding, for strength (Joan still has some medical exams), for the right contacts etc, but above all for God’s peace in everything. We will keep you up-dated and are grateful for your commitment to us! Warm greetings from Henk, Joan, Nathan and Ezra
Last week I was in a mall, busy sending out the breaking news to our readers. Suddenly a man stood in front of me: ‘Thank you so much for the time you invested in me and my wife. Our marriage is now healthy.’ A few days ago another encouragement… Because our car broke down again (radiator is leaking), I had to hitch hike for a bit. I stopped a car that was passing. The man in the car said: ‘Henk, long time not seen!’ Two years ago I had prayed with him in the car and afterwards I had counseled him. I believe we met about 5-6 times, after that he went of the radar. Before I met him two years ago, he had lived in the Netherlands for 20 years and used coke. So now he told me that he first wanted to be ‘on the right track’ before contacting me again. ‘Henk, you don’t know what happened with me after you prayed for me. I now have a healthy family and in 4 months I’m done with my studies for tax consultancy. I’m going to church every Sunday and we have a home group. I experience such peace!’ Meanwhile we had arrived my destination and we said goodbye to each other. So sweet of God to show me in these ways how He keeps working in the lives of the people I invested in…

Beaking News, Like most of you know, I was in the Netherlands in October 2015 when 34 Roma’s were baptized. Since that moment 47 Roma’s and one Dutch man have been baptized. One of the reasons we came back was the Roma’s request for coaching and guidance. And now we are already 3 months (Joan and the boys 2) months in the Netherlands and live in a beautiful house in Enschede. Meanwhile there were many meetings and conversations with several Roma families. They all have a strong desire for a Roma church. In our neighbourhood is a community centre with a big playground, a perfect location for meetings. I created a facebook page called Kangeri Enschede, just as the church. (Kangeri means church in Roma language.) I won’t be their pastor, I am brother Henk and we will be family to each other. We will surely keep moving organically and organise activities for the youth and women. The location is perfect for it. We will also build relationships with other kangeri’s in Europe.

15 oktober Dear Prayer Friends , Would you please pray for us specifically? We need wisdom, and breakthrough in the hearts of the Roma people, so that they will choose to leave their old lives behind. If you get revelation in the spiritual realm about us, the Roma church or Enschede (the city we live in), please let us know. Warm greetings, Henk Kempers..
2 oktober Today we had our second service of Kangeri Enschede, the Roma Church. God was in our midst. There was teaching, a lot of interaction and practice. Roma people prayed for each other, for healing, for baptism with fire of the Holy Spirit. Another Roma man gave his life to Jesus. One man got healed from pain in his back, another man’s leg got healed. Beautiful! Every Tuesday morning we have Biblestudy for the women about identity. Soon we’ll start a men’s group as well. Our vision is to go and make disciples…. and we see it happening. Please keep praying for us and the Roma’s… what God started, He will complete! (Philippians 1:6)
